Passenger services will be affected from 2am on Thursday morning to 4am on Monday. As well as affecting commuters, the strike is expected to hit thousands preparing to travel to Berlin for the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall this weekend.
The walkout, the sixth strike called by the GDL train drivers' union since September, has been met with public anger in a country where strikes are relatively rare and people are not used to such interruptions to transport services.
Politicians from all the major parties have united in condemning the latest action.
