SHANGHAI - A car crashed into the guardrail of theConsulate General of the United States in Shanghai late Thursday, injuring aChinese armed police guard.
In a statement released early Friday, Shanghai police saidthe car, a black Toyota sedan with license plate registered in SoutheastChina's Fujian province, drove along the South Urumqi Road before it suddenlyveered right to hit the guardrail of the side entrance of the consulate at 9:43pm. Police nearby and consulate guards captured thedriver.
The driver, identified as Liu Daojie, 35, from Sanming Cityof Fujian province, claimed he ran a large company in Fujian and felt someonewanted to kill him, so he needed to provoke an incident to draw people'sattention.
"I drove from Hangzhou to Shanghai today, and saw theplace is guarded by armed police. So I crashed my car into it," the policestatement quoted Liu as saying.
The police statement said Liu showed confusion of thinking,and spoke incoherently. The police has basically ruled out drunk driving anddrug driving. Further investigation is under way.
